Staying within the speed limit

Many car drivers unintentionally exceed the speed limit, often without realising it. Modern cars are so powerful and comfortable they give drivers little sense of their speed. It is very easy to creep above the limit. Drivers are responsible for the speeds at which they choose to drive. However, there are some practical things drivers who find it difficult to stay with speed limits can do to help themselves:

  1. Check your speedometer regularly, especially when leaving high speed roads.
  2. Look for signs, especially at junctions.
  3. Remember, speed limits are a maximum not a target.
  4. 20’s plenty when kids are about – and may even be too fast!
  5. Identify what makes you speed – keeping up with traffic, overtaking, loud music etc.
  6. Concentrate – free yourself of distraction.
  7. Slow down when entering villages.
  8. Where possible, avoid using higher than third gear when in a 30pmh speed limit.
  9. Assume lamp posts mean 30mph – but it could also be 20mph.
  10. Give yourself plenty of time to make the journey.
