Managed Motorways Enforcement

The Active Traffic Management (ATM) scheme has been put in place on the M42 and M6 motorways in the West Midlands. ATM puts new technologies on our existing motorways to provide:

  • Reliable journey times
  • Reduced congestion
  • Enhanced information to drivers
  • Quicker response times to incidents

The system uses variable speed limits to allow use of the hard shoulder and reduced speeds to ease congestion. The system is operated by National Highways . However, to ensure compliance with the mandatory speed limits, enforcement cameras are placed on a number of overhead gantries. West Midlands Police is merely the enforcement agency regarding these cameras and any queries regarding the operation of these cameras should be directed to National Highways.

The ATM system is used on 17 km of the M42 between junctions 3a and 7 and 33 km of the M6 between junctions 4 and 10a as shown on the map below:

The ATM system on the M42 was the first operational system of this type in the country and has proved to be so successful that it is being rolled out to other areas of the motorway network.
